Already a Tongits pro? Skip ahead. For those who need a little review before hitting the Jili QQ tables, here's how the game works.
Tongits is played by three players using a standard 52-card deck. The dealer receives 13 cards; the other two players get 12 cards each. The remaining cards form the draw pile in the centre.
On your turn, draw a card from the pile or take the top discard. Arrange your hand into sets (three or four of the same rank) and runs (three or more consecutive cards of the same suit). These are laid down as melds on the table.
You can also add cards to your opponents' melds to reduce your hand count — this is called sapaw. Good timing on sapaw can swing a game completely.
Win by going Tongits — emptying your hand completely — or by calling a fight (laban) when you believe you have the lowest unmelded card value. The player with the fewest points in hand wins the pot.
If the draw pile runs out without anyone winning, the player with the fewest points in hand wins — unless someone challenges with a laban call first.
Knowing card values is key to deciding when to call laban or wait for a better hand.
| Card | Point Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ace (A) | 1 pt | Lowest value card |
| 2 – 9 | Face value | 2 pts to 9 pts respectively |
| 10, J, Q, K | 10 pts each | High-penalty cards to hold |
Good Tongits players don't just rely on luck — they read the table, manage their hand efficiently, and know exactly when to go for the win. Here are some practical tips that actually work at the Jili QQ tables.
Face cards (10, J, Q, K) each carry 10 points. If you're stuck with a handful of them at the end of a round, your losses can pile up fast. Try to dump or meld them as early as possible — holding onto a King hoping for a run rarely pays off.
The discard pile tells a story. If an opponent keeps throwing mid-range cards, they may be building a run in a specific suit. Denying them the card they need — even at a small cost to yourself — can shift the whole momentum of the round.
Calling laban too early is one of the most common mistakes on Jili QQ. If another player has been melding consistently, there's a good chance their unmelded hand is already lower than yours. Wait for a solid read before challenging.
Adding cards to an opponent's meld via sapaw isn't just a defensive move — it can also thin your hand rapidly and put you in a dominant position. Use sapaw aggressively when you have multiple add-on cards ready to go.
Folding costs a small penalty, but sometimes it's smarter than paying a big debt at the end of a losing round. At the Jili QQ beginner tables, newer players often hold on too long — learn to cut losses early and preserve your bankroll.
